What Daily Life in Casey Actually Looks Like for Our Participants

Casey is one of Melbourne’s most connected and rapidly growing areas in the south east, and from a practical standpoint, that works in our participants’ favour. Here is what daily life in the area genuinely looks like, not the tourism version.

Healthcare is close and accessible. Casey Hospital at 62-70 Kangan Drive in Berwick is the main public hospital for the area, covering emergency, mental health, rehabilitation, surgical, and maternity services. St John of God Berwick Hospital is also nearby for private care. Better Rehab in Narre Warren offers NDIS-funded occupational therapy and speech therapy services with in-home and clinic options. Berwick Springs Medical Centre on Berwick-Cranbourne Road has allied health and GP services on site. For most of our participants, managing regular health appointments does not require a trip across the city.

Getting around without a car is realistic. The Cranbourne and Pakenham train lines both run through the area, with stations at Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, and Hallam connecting participants to the rest of Melbourne. Local bus routes link suburbs within Casey for shorter trips. For participants building confidence in public transport, our support workers accompany you until you are ready to travel independently. It is worth noting that some bus connections between suburbs can be infrequent, so we factor this into how we plan community access support for each participant.

Community and recreation options are genuinely good. Casey ARC on Berwick-Cranbourne Road is a fully accessible aquatic and fitness centre used regularly by our participants. Bunjil Place in Narre Warren runs arts events, theatre, and community programs throughout the year. OC Connections at the Cranbourne West Community Hub provides activity-based programs specifically for NDIS participants aged 15 to 65, including travel training and supported community outings. Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick and Myuna Farm in Doveton are popular with participants who enjoy being outdoors. The Narre Warren Learning Hub offers group programs for people with disability.

Shopping and everyday errands are straightforward. Casey Central Shopping Centre on Berwick-Cranbourne Road has over 130 stores with wheelchair-friendly access throughout. Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre is well placed for participants in the Cranbourne area for groceries, pharmacy, and daily needs. Westfield Fountain Gate covers larger shopping trips and has a wide accessibility infrastructure.

The community is culturally diverse. Casey has over 150 cultural backgrounds represented across its suburbs. For multicultural families and participants from non-English-speaking backgrounds, finding a place that feels familiar matters. Hilda Care reflects that diversity in our team. We provide support in more than 15 languages, including languages common in Casey’s south east communities, which makes a genuine practical difference for participants and families who have faced language barriers with other providers.

SIL and SDA in Casey: What Is the Difference?

These two terms come up together constantly, and it is easy to mix them up. The short answer is that SIL is the support, and SDA is the home.

SDA

SDA Specialist Disability Accommodation is funding for the physical property of a home that has been purpose-built or modified for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. Features like ceiling hoists, wider doorways, or reinforced walls are funded through SDA, not SIL.

SIL

Supported Independent Living

SIL Supported Independent Living covers the cost of your support workers and the daily assistance they provide inside your home. It does not pay for rent or the property itself. You can receive SIL support in a standard rental property, a shared house, or an SDA-approved home.

The two are assessed and funded completely separately. Many participants have SIL without SDA. Some have both. If you are unsure which applies to your situation, we can help you work through it before your next planning meeting.

What Does NDIS Supported Independent Living in Casey Cover?

SIL support is funded through the Core Supports section of your NDIS plan. The NDIS determines how much funding you receive based on your assessed needs, so the support you get is tailored to your daily life, not a standard package.

Independent living support in Casey through Hilda Care typically includes:

  • Personal care including showering, grooming, and dressing
  • Meal planning and preparation
  • Medication prompting and health management
  • Household tasks including cleaning, laundry, and tidying
  • Help managing bills, appointments, and daily schedules
  • Transport to medical appointments, social activities, and community events
  • Overnight support and active night shifts when needed
  • Skill-building to grow your independence over time
  • Community participation and social connections

We have over 200 support workers across our network. Before any placement, we take time to understand your personality, communication style, cultural background, and goals. That matching process is not an afterthought; it directly affects how settled and supported you feel in your home from week one.

Each property is set up with accessibility in mind. Features vary by home and are matched to the needs of the people living there, whether that is wider doorways, modified bathrooms, or specific assistive technology setups. Homes are furnished and liveable, not clinical.

When you enquire about SIL accommodation in Casey, we talk you through which properties currently have availability and which might be the right fit. We arrange visits before any decision is made. You will not be asked to commit to a home you have not seen or housemates you have not met.

How to Apply for NDIS SIL Housing in Casey

The process has a few moving parts, but it is manageable when broken down. The NDIS office in Narre Warren can assist with plan-related queries if you need local face-to-face support.

StepTitleDescription
Step 1Check your eligibility. You need to be an NDIS participant with a disability that significantly affects your ability to live safely without daily support. If you are not yet on the NDIS, that is the starting point.
Step 2Talk to your NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator.Let them know you are interested in supported independent living in Casey. Ask specifically about whether SIL is appropriate for your situation or whether another option, like Individualised Living Options, might suit you better.
Step 3Get a Functional Capacity Assessment. This is completed by a registered occupational therapist. It documents your daily support needs in detail and is the key evidence the NDIS uses to determine your SIL funding level. The OT will visit you in your current living situation.
Step 4Contact a registered SIL provider.Reach out to Hilda Care. We will talk through your goals, assess your needs, and prepare a Roster of Care that outlines the types and frequencies of support you need throughout the week.
Step 5Submit to the NDIS for approval.Your support coordinator and our team work together to submit your SIL quote and Roster of Care to the NDIS. They review everything and notify you of the funding decision in writing.
Step 6Visit homes, meet housemates, and move in.Once funding is approved, you visit the properties, meet anyone already living there, and sign a service agreement before moving in. At Hilda Care, you also meet your key support worker before day one.

The full process typically takes three to six months, so starting early makes a real difference. If you are unsure where you are in this process, call us, and we will talk it through.

How SIL Funding Works

SIL funding is included in the Core Supports budget in your NDIS plan. It covers your support workers only. Rent and everyday living expenses are paid separately, usually from your Disability Support Pension or other personal income.

The amount of funding you receive depends on your level of support need. Someone who needs a few hours of assistance each day receives different funding from someone who requires 24/7 care with active overnight shifts. The NDIS determines your funding through the Functional Capacity Assessment and the Roster of Care document your provider prepares.

If you also have SDA funding, that covers the housing costs separately. Not everyone with SIL has SDA. Most of our participants in Casey live in standard rental properties with SIL support. If you want help understanding what your current plan includes or what you might be eligible for, our team can go through it with you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I have to live with other people in a SIL home?

Not necessarily. SIL can be provided in shared homes or in individual arrangements. Shared living is more common because the cost of support is divided between housemates, but individual SIL is possible if your needs or circumstances require it.

Can I choose my own support workers?

Yes. You can express preferences, and we do our best to match you with people you feel comfortable with. We aim to keep your team consistent so you build real working relationships over time, rather than adjusting to a different face every week.

What if my needs change after I move in?

Your support plan is reviewed regularly. If your health situation or goals change, we update your Roster of Care and, if needed, request a plan reassessment through the NDIS. You are not locked into something that no longer fits your life.

Can I switch SIL providers if I am not happy?

Yes. You have the right to change providers with reasonable notice. If you are currently with another provider and want to explore a move to Hilda Care in Casey, we can talk through what that transition would look like and how to make it as straightforward as possible.

What community activities can I access in Casey?

Quite a lot. Casey ARC has accessible aquatic and fitness programs. Bunjil Place runs arts, theatre, and community events throughout the year. OC Connections at Cranbourne West Community Hub offers structured activity programs and travel training specifically for NDIS participants. Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick and Myuna Farm in Doveton are regularly used by our participants who enjoy outdoor activities. Our support workers help participants get to and from all of these as part of their community participation support.

How long does it take to get SIL funding approved?

The process typically takes three to six months, sometimes longer, depending on how complete your evidence is when submitted. This is why we encourage people to start the conversation early. Our team can help you understand which documentation is needed and ensure your application is as thorough as possible from the beginning.
