What Is Supported Independent Living?

What Is Supported Independent Living?

Supported independent living (SIL) is an NDIS-funded support that helps people with disability live at home by providing assistance with daily tasks. The goal is not to do everything for someone but to help them do as much as they can on their own, with a support worker there for the parts that are harder or unsafe to manage alone.

SIL is for people who need regular support at home, sometimes around the clock. This can include:

  • Personal care, like showering, dressing, and grooming
  • Meal preparation and household tasks
  • Medication management and getting to appointments
  • Community access and social activities
  • Building daily living skills over time
  • Overnight or 24/7 support where needed

SIL funding covers your support workers, not your rent or groceries. Those come from your own income, usually your Disability Support Pension. It is a common point of confusion, and we are happy to walk you through it.

Why Staying Local Matters

Brimbank covers suburbs like St Albans, Sunshine, Deer Park, Keilor, and Cairnlea, with access to public transport, shopping areas, community centres and services like Sunshine Hospital. Many participants also prefer being close to transport hubs like St Albans Station so they can stay connected to appointments, family, and familiar routines. For many people, staying local makes the transition into SIL feel far less overwhelming.

At Hilda Care, we have supported over 150 clients across the Brimbank area and its surrounds. Our support workers are local, which means they know the streets, the services, and how to get around. That matters when someone is relying on them every day.

For participants specifically looking for SIL in St Albans, we have homes there too. Our team is part of that community, not just passing through it.

How to Get SIL Funded in Your NDIS Plan

Our SIL Homes in Brimbank

Our homes are designed to feel lived in and comfortable, not clinical or institutional. Most have two to four residents, though we also support participants in individual arrangements where that is a better fit.

Each home includes fully furnished shared and private spaces, accessibility features where needed, on-site support based on your plan, and regular upkeep. Across Melbourne, we manage over 20 SIL and SDA properties, and we take home matching seriously. We look at your routines, your needs, and who you would be living with before placing anyone.

Some participants prefer quieter homes, while others enjoy a more social environment. Getting that balance right matters more than most people realise.

What Day-to-Day SIL Support Actually Looks Like

The support we provide is built around your NDIS plan, your routine, and the level of help you actually need day-to-day. With more than 200 support workers across our team delivering over 5,000 hours of support every week, we have the capacity to provide consistent, reliable care.

Daily Personal Care

We help with showering, dressing, and grooming, done with respect and at a pace that suits you.

Cooking meals that match your preferences and dietary needs, with a focus on building your own skills over time, if that is part of your goals.

Making sure you take the right medication at the right time and supporting you to attend medical appointments.

Household Tasks

Cleaning, laundry, and general upkeep to keep your home comfortable.

Getting you to activities, appointments, and social events. We want you to have a life outside the house.

Helping you become more confident and capable over time, whether that is public transport, budgeting, or everyday routines.

Overnight and 24/7 Support

For participants who need someone there through the night, we provide overnight support, subject to your plan’s coverage.

For participants who have a Positive Behaviour Support Plan, our team is trained to follow it consistently.

How SIL Funding Works

SIL funding comes from the Core Supports budget in your NDIS plan. The NDIA works out how much you receive based on the support you need each day, using a document called a Roster of Care that maps your regular and irregular support needs.

What SIL funding covers:

  • Support worker costs
  • Overnight and 24/7 supervision (where included in your plan)
  • Irregular support for unexpected situations

What SIL funding does not cover:

  • Rent or board
  • Groceries, utilities, and personal items
  • Home modifications (those sit under SDA or other NDIS categories)

Funding amounts vary depending on need. Someone requiring around-the-clock support will have a much higher SIL budget than someone needing only a few hours per day. The NDIS uses support ratios to calculate this, such as 1:1 (one worker per participant) or 1:2 (one worker shared between two participants).

How to Apply for SIL: Step by Step

The process takes time. It is worth starting earlier than you think you need to.

Step 1: Make sure you have an active NDIS plan

If you are not yet on the NDIS, that is the first step. You need to be under 65, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent disability that significantly affects daily life.

Step 2: Talk to your support coordinator

If you have one, they are your best starting point. They will help you work out whether SIL is the right support for your situation and what you need to pull together.

Step 3: Get an Occupational Therapist assessment

This is usually the most important piece of evidence in any SIL application. The OT assesses what you can and cannot do on your own and explains what level of support makes sense. Without a solid OT report, SIL applications often stall.

Step 4: Work with a SIL provider on a roster of care

The roster of care is a detailed plan of the support you will receive, how many hours, what tasks, and what ratios. We help with this. It is submitted to the NDIA as part of your funding application.

Step 5: NDIA reviews and decides

The NDIA looks at everything and makes a funding decision. They may approve it as submitted, adjust it, or ask for more information. Your support coordinator manages this part of the process.

Step 6: Find the right home and move in

Once funding is confirmed, you go through the home matching process and transition in. We do not just hand over a key. We spend time making sure the first few weeks feel as settled as possible.

The whole process from start to approved funding can take several months. If you are thinking about SIL, now is the right time to start the conversation.

Is SIL the Right Option for You?

SIL works best for people who need daily support with personal care, household tasks, or safety, who benefit from a structured home environment, and who have a permanent disability that significantly affects their day-to-day life. It suits people with physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, acquired brain injuries, mental health conditions, and complex support needs.

If you are not sure whether SIL is the right option, we are happy to talk it through with you and your family. No commitment needed at that stage.
