What Is NDIS Personal Care Support?

NDIS personal care helps people with daily activities they may not be able to safely do on their own because of their disability, things like showering, grooming, dressing, toileting, and continence care.

It is funded through your Core Supports budget under the Assistance with Personal Activities category. Core Supports are generally flexible, so funding can move between personal care, household tasks, community participation, and transport without a formal plan change. The only exception is if a support is listed as stated in your plan, which locks it to a specific category.

What Our Personal Care Support Workers Do

Personal care involves some of the most private moments in a person’s day. Our workers approach every shift with respect, patience, and a clear understanding of your routine and preferences. Before anyone arrives at your door, they are briefed on your needs, your communication style, and how you like things done.

Showering and Grooming Assistance: Our workers assist with showering, bathing, hair care, shaving, nail care, and skin care in a way that respects your comfort and preferred level of independence.

Personal Hygiene Support: Our workers can help with personal hygiene, including oral care and skin care, and will apply non-medicated creams where directed by a health professional.

Dressing and Clothing Support: Getting dressed, choosing clothing, and managing your morning and evening routines are all guided by your preferences and comfort.

Toileting and Continence Care: Our workers approach every task with sensitivity and respect for your privacy.

Medication Reminders: Medication reminders are built into your routine, so nothing gets missed.

Mobility and Transfers: If you use mobility aids or need help with transfers and repositioning, your worker is briefed on the right technique before they arrive.

All in-home personal care is delivered within your funded hours and aligned with your NDIS daily living support goals.

Common Misunderstandings About SIL and SDA

High Intensity Personal Care

Some people need a higher level of care, including those with complex health conditions, respiratory support needs, behaviour of concern, or physical requirements that call for two workers.

Hilda Care has workers trained in high-intensity personal care. The NDIA assesses these needs individually, taking into account medical condition, physical demands, and whether the need is ongoing or temporary.

If your current funding does not reflect a recent change following surgery, a deterioration in health, or a move, a change-of-circumstances review through myNDIS can be used to request a reassessment.

Why Melbourne Participants Choose Us

Registered with the NDIS Commission Since 2018

Hilda Care has been registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission since 2018 (Provider Number 4050126032). Our Assist-Personal Activities registration is current and in good standing.

For families choosing a personal care provider, that history matters. It means you are working with a provider that is held to a standard, audited, and has been doing this since 2018.

NDIS-Screened and Trained Support Workers

Every worker holds a current NDIS Worker Screening clearance and police check before entering someone’s home. They are trained in trauma-informed care and fully briefed on your needs before the first shift. Every worker arrives knowing what you need.

Multilingual Team

When personal care is involved, being able to communicate clearly and feel understood matters.

Our team speaks English, Italian, Turkish, Filipino, Portuguese, Macedonian, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, and Arabic. Where possible, we match workers based on language so you feel at ease during every shift.

200+ Support Workers Across Melbourne

With 200+ workers across Melbourne, we maintain consistent rostering and arrange cover when your regular worker is unavailable. A familiar face who knows your routine makes every shift calmer and more predictable.

Who Can Access NDIS Personal Care Support

Eligibility is based on how your disability affects your ability to manage daily personal activities safely, not your diagnosis.

You can access personal care through Hilda Care regardless of how your plan is managed:

  • NDIA-managed: The provider claims directly against your plan via the NDIS portal
  • Plan-managed: Your plan manager pays provider invoices from your Core Supports budget
  • Self-managed: You pay the provider directly and claim the costs back from the NDIA

If you need to demonstrate your personal care needs for a new plan or review, functional evidence from an occupational therapist or treating health professional is typically required. We can help you understand what documentation may be useful.

Our Approach to Personal Care Support

Step What Happens
1. Understanding your needs We talk through your routine, preferences, and any specific requirements, including worker gender preference and language
2. Reviewing your funding We review your NDIS plan to confirm funded hours, plan management type, and any stated supports
3. Finding the right support worker A suitable worker is identified based on skills, experience, and your preferences. You are introduced before the first shift, where possible
4. Meeting your worker The worker arrives fully briefed on your routine, physical requirements, communication style, and any behaviour support plan
5. Keeping things on track Support is reviewed regularly. If your needs change, a new health condition, a change in mobility, or adjusted goals, we adjust before the next shift

Personal Care Across Different Living Situations

In Your Own Home

Shifts are built around your existing routine: mornings, evenings, weekends, whatever works. We prioritise sending the same worker each time. Over time, they get to know your home, your preferences, and the small things that make your day easier.

In a Supported Independent Living (SIL) Home

Each person in a Supported Independent Living (SIL) home has their own individually funded personal care hours not shared with housemates. Hilda Care handles the scheduling so every person in the home gets their support when they need it, without delays.

During Short-Term Accommodation (STA)

Before the stay begins, we share your routine, preferences, and any specific requirements with the team. You should not have to re-explain how you like things done when you arrive somewhere new.

Following a Hospital Discharge

Coming home after a hospitalisation often means your care needs have changed. We can help you work out what support you need, what your current funding covers, and what to do if a reassessment is required through myNDIS.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I request a specific gender for my personal care support worker?

Yes. If you prefer a male or female worker for tasks involving dressing, bathing, or toileting, this is documented in your service agreement and respected at every shift. If your regular worker is unavailable, a suitable replacement is arranged first.

Does the NDIS fund personal care overnight or on weekends?

Yes. Personal care can be funded at any time, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays. Rates are set by the NDIS Pricing Arrangements.

Can my worker also help with household tasks on the same shift?

Yes, in most cases. Both sit within Core Supports, so a single worker can assist with both in the same shift.

How much does NDIS personal care support cost?

Rates are set by the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and vary depending on the type of support and when it is delivered, weekday, evening, weekend, or public holiday. You do not pay out of pocket. Your plan manager or the NDIA can confirm current rates.

How quickly can I start with Hilda Care?

Once you get in touch, we will discuss your needs, review your funding, and begin matching you with a worker. In most cases, we can have someone confirmed and a start date set within a short timeframe.

Do you provide personal care near me in Melbourne?

We cover a wide range of areas in Melbourne, including Dandenong, Werribee, Preston, and Footscray. Get in touch with your suburb, and we will confirm availability.
