SIL Provider Footscray | Supported Independent Living Where Your Goals Come First
Many families in Footscray face the same problem when looking for SIL support. They contact providers only to find out the team is based in inner Melbourne and cannot reliably get to Footscray. Or they get placed in a home and discover the support workers keep changing, making it hard to build trust or explain their needs each time.
Hilda Care is a SIL provider in Footscray with homes near the area and a team that stays consistent. We understand the western suburbs and the people who live here. When you move into SIL with us, you get support workers who know you, not a rotating roster of strangers. We are registered with the NDIS (Registration Number: 4050126032).

SIL Funding and What It Actually Covers in Footscray
Many families in Footscray do not know what SIL actually pays for. They assume it covers everything at home, then get surprised when they find out rent and groceries are not included.
SIL is NDIS funding that pays for support workers to help you with daily tasks at home. It covers personal care like showering and dressing, meal preparation, medication prompts, household cleaning, laundry, getting to appointments and community activities, and overnight support depending on your plan.
What SIL does not cover is rent, food, electricity, internet or the house itself. You pay those from your own income, usually the Disability Support Pension and Commonwealth Rent Assistance.
Before you move in, we give you two figures in writing so you can see the full picture. The weekly cost of SIL support and the estimated weekly cost of living. That way there are no surprises.
If SIL is not yet in your NDIS plan, your support coordinator can check whether it should be. For the full details on how the NDIA decides on SIL eligibility, see our SIL funding eligibility guide.

Shared SIL Homes in Footscray or Close By
Some people in Footscray want a shared home because it feels less isolating and the cost is lower. Others are unsure whether a shared home will work for them because they worry about conflict with housemates or loss of privacy.
In a shared SIL home, you have your own private bedroom with a lock on the door. The kitchen, living room, bathroom and outdoor space are shared with two to three other participants. A team of support workers is rostered through the week to support everyone according to their plan.
The key difference between a poor match and a good one is what happens before move-in. We talk with you about your routine, interests, how you communicate and what you need from the people around you. We then check that against who is already living in the home. If it suits everyone, you meet your potential housemates before deciding.
We have access to shared SIL homes in Truganina and Tarneit, which are 15 to 20 minutes from central Footscray. If you prefer a home closer to Footscray itself, we can discuss other options with you and your support coordinator.
What Your First Week in a SIL Home Looks Like
Moving into a new home with new support workers can feel overwhelming. Many people do not know what to expect or who to turn to if something feels wrong in those first days.
Your first week starts before move-in day. Your support coordinator, you and us get together to finalize your Roster of Care, which shows who will be supporting you and when. On move-in day, your room is ready, your key is yours, and one of your assigned support workers meets you to go through the home and explain how things work.
In the first week, we check in with you regularly. Not just if there is a problem, but to see how you are settling. Your support workers know what to look for because they will be supporting you ongoing. If something is uncomfortable or not working, we address it straight away. You do not have to wait for a formal review.
By the end of week one, you have met your team, you know where things are, and you know who to call if you need something.

Keeping Your Independence While Getting the Support You Need
Some people worry that moving into SIL means losing control over their daily life and becoming dependent on support workers making all the decisions.
SIL support is there to help you do the things you want to do, not to do everything for you. If you can make breakfast with a reminder, we remind you. If you can get yourself to the bus stop once you know the route, we fade back. If you want to learn to cook a meal, we step in to help, not to take over.
Your daily routine is yours. We build your roster around what you want your day to look like, not around what is easiest for us to staff. If you want to sleep in on weekends, that is your choice. If you want to spend your afternoon at the local shops or at a community group, your support is built around that.
The goal is for you to do more independently each month, not less.
Adjusting Your SIL Support When Your Needs or Goals Change
Many people’s situations change after they move into SIL. Your health might shift, your goals might change, or you might want to try something new. Some participants are unsure whether they can ask for changes or have to wait months for a plan review.
You can ask for a change any time. If your needs have shifted or you want your support adjusted, contact us and we review it with you and your coordinator. We update your Roster of Care when things change. You do not have to wait for a scheduled plan review.
We have supported people through changes in health, people moving out of their area, people wanting to pick up work or study, and people finding a housemate is not working anymore. Changes are normal and we adjust for them.

Working With Your Support Coordinator From Start to Finish
Some participants feel like they are stuck between their coordinator and their SIL provider, unsure who to ask for what or who is responsible for sorting things out.
We work alongside your support coordinator from the first conversation through to move-in and beyond. Your coordinator handles your NDIS plan and funding. We handle the day-to-day support and the home. When something needs both of us, we communicate directly with your coordinator so you are not left explaining the same thing twice.
If you do not have a support coordinator yet, we can point you in the right direction. Your coordinator is your link to the NDIS and an important part of making SIL work.
Transport Options and Getting Around Western Suburbs With SIL
Getting to appointments, work, study or community activities is hard when you rely on someone for a lift and that person is unavailable. Many people in Footscray worry that moving into SIL will mean missing commitments because transport falls through.
Transport to appointments, work, study and community activities is part of what your SIL support covers. Your support worker helps you get where you need to go, arranged according to your plan. Where possible, we plan a backup option so a missed lift does not cancel your plans.
Footscray has good public transport links through the Footscray rail station and bus routes across the western suburbs. Your support worker can help you use those independently once you know the routes, or accompany you if that is what you need.

Questions Footscray Families Ask About SIL
Can I arrange SIL support in my own home instead of a shared house?
Yes. Some participants in Footscray have their own home and prefer to have support workers come to them rather than move into shared accommodation. This works well if you already have a place you want to stay in and want to maintain your independence in that space.
Do your support workers know the Footscray area well?
We have a team based in the western suburbs who know Footscray, Truganina and Tarneit. This means workers can get to you reliably and understand the local community, the train lines, the shops and local services. Having a local team is important because it means consistency and reliability.
What if I need to get to work or appointments on the Pakenham line?
Transport is part of your SIL support. If you work or study on the Pakenham line or need appointments out that way, your support worker arranges that as part of your plan. We coordinate with your support coordinator so those times are built into your roster in advance.
Will the same support workers come to me each time, or do they change?
We aim to keep a small consistent team supporting you. You do not get a different worker every shift. When a shift needs covering, we use workers who already know you rather than bringing in someone new. If a new worker does come in, they are briefed before they arrive so you do not start from scratch.
Can I still go to community groups and see my friends if I move to Truganina or Tarneit?
Yes. Transport to community groups, friends, activities and places that matter to you is part of your support plan. Being 15 to 20 minutes away from Footscray does not mean losing your connections. We help you stay part of what you care about.
What does overnight support mean and how does it work on a normal night?
It depends on what your plan funds. Active night support means a worker stays awake through the night. Sleepover support means a worker sleeps on site but is available if you need them. We talk through which option makes sense for your situation before you move in and include it in your roster.
How often do you actually communicate with my support coordinator about how things are going?
We communicate with your coordinator regularly, not just when there is a problem. We do check-ins so issues are caught early. If something needs attention, we sort it out with your coordinator quickly rather than waiting for a formal plan review.

My experience dealing with this organisation has been very disappointing. They seem unorganised, unprofessional arrogant and downright disrespectful of peoples time.Posted on Google![]()

Hilda Care is outstanding. As a Support Coordinator, I’ve had situations where I needed a Support Worker at the very last minute for my cleints, and they delivered without hesitation. Not once or twice but always. They found the right person within hours and made sure the client felt safe and supported. They have paid heed to client’s feedback and tweaked their services accordingly everytime. Their staff are well trained, reliable, and always go above and beyond to meet client needs. It’s clear they genuinely put clients first. Highly recommended.Posted on Google![]()
