Supported Independent Living for Mental Health and Psychosocial Disability

Finding SIL that works for a mental health condition is harder than it should be. Most SIL providers are set up for physical and cognitive disabilities with predictable needs, consistent routines and steady staffing. Psychosocial disability does not work that way. Needs change. One week is manageable. The next week is not. A standard SIL arrangement that cannot adjust for that will fail, often at the worst possible time.

Hilda Care provides supported independent living for participants with psychosocial disability across Melbourne. We have homes with rooms available now. Before we start any arrangement, we build a plan for the hard days. Not after something goes wrong, but before anyone moves in.

SIL Funding for Mental Health Participants and What It Covers

SIL is an NDIS-funded support service that pays for trained workers to help you with daily tasks at home. For participants with a psychosocial disability, this means help with the practical side of daily life. Not clinical treatment, but the everyday support that makes living independently possible.

What SIL CoversWhat SIL Does Not Cover
Personal care including showering, grooming and dressingClinical mental health treatment
Meal preparation and managing nutritionMedication costs
Medication prompts and health routinesRent and property costs
Household tasks such as cleaning and laundryGroceries, bills and personal expenses
Getting to appointments and community activitiesPsychology, psychiatry or case management
Building daily living skills at your own pace
Overnight support depending on assessed needs

SIL works alongside your clinical team, not instead of them. Your psychiatrist, GP, psychosocial recovery coach and case manager stay in place. SIL provides the daily support structure around those clinical relationships.

Day In Supported Independent Living

Psychosocial SIL Needs a Different Approach

Most SIL rosters are built around a fixed schedule: morning support, evening support, overnight if needed. That model assumes your support needs are roughly the same every day. For participants with a mental health condition, that is usually not the case.

Psychosocial disability changes week to week. A participant might manage almost everything on their own for two or three weeks, then need a lot more support for a period. A roster that is not set up for that will be short-staffed exactly when things get hard.

Before any Hilda Care SIL arrangement begins, we do three things that a standard SIL setup often skips. We identify early warning signs with the participant, their family and their treating team. We write a plan for hard days before they happen, not in response to a crisis. We match housemates carefully, because the people you live with affect your wellbeing as much as the support workers do. The roster is built last, once we understand the full picture.

Mental Health SIL Support Built Around the Participant

The quality of a mental health SIL arrangement comes down to the workers. A different person every shift makes it hard to build trust, and trust matters a lot in psychosocial support.

At Hilda Care, participants are supported by a small, consistent team. The same workers across the same shifts. When something changes in how a participant is going, the workers notice because they know the person, not just the plan.

Workers are matched to participants, not just to shifts. We look at language, cultural background and communication style. Our team includes workers who speak English, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, Filipino and Macedonian.

How We Support Participants When Things Get Hard

Before anyone moves in, we sit down with the participant, their family and their treating team to write a hard day plan. Not a generic checklist. A plan specific to that person. It covers their early warning signs, what has helped in the past, what has not helped, and who to contact depending on what is happening.

When a hard day comes, our workers follow that plan. That might mean staying closer, keeping the day quieter, helping the participant get to an appointment, or calling the case manager or GP. The workers know what to do because they helped build the plan and they know the participant.

If a participant’s safety is at risk, we contact the treating team or the local mental health crisis service and call 000 if needed. After a difficult period, we review what happened with the participant and update the plan. The participant is part of that conversation every time.

Our workers are not clinicians. Their role is daily support and following the plan. The clinical response comes from the treating team we stay in contact with.

NDIS Eligibility for Psychosocial SIL

SIL funding for a psychosocial disability is available to NDIS participants who need support for most of the day to live at home. If that sounds like your situation, we can help you understand what is needed and what the process looks like.

When you contact us, we talk through your current situation, your NDIS plan and what support you need day to day. If SIL looks like the right fit, we explain what evidence the NDIA needs and what your support coordinator will be putting together. We do not leave you to work that out on your own.

The key documents are a functional assessment from an occupational therapist, reports from your treating team that show how your needs change over time, and a proposed roster of care. We can explain what a roster of care involves and what information goes into it.

If SIL is not yet in your plan, start by calling us or your support coordinator. For more detail on how the NDIA assesses eligibility, see our SIL funding eligibility guide.

Hospital Discharge to SIL and How It Works

If you or someone you care for is in a mental health unit and discharge is being held up because there is no housing in place, contact us directly. We treat hospital discharges as a priority and move as fast as the funding allows.

Ward social workers and discharge planners can send a referral to us directly. We reply the same day, start the funding and housing conversation straight away, and work with the ward team to plan the move. Most participants are housed within 14 days of funding being confirmed.

If you are a social worker or discharge planner, use our referral form or call 1300 440 777. If you are a participant or family member, the same number reaches our team.

SIL Homes with Rooms Available Now

We have SIL homes across Melbourne with rooms currently available. Homes are located across Melbourne’s west, north and south east, including Tarneit, Truganina, Point Cook, Greensborough, Frankston, Cranbourne and Dandenong.

Every home is matched for housemate fit before anyone moves in. For mental health SIL, this matters more than most. The people you live with affect your recovery and your day-to-day stability.

My experience dealing with this organisation has been very disappointing. They seem unorganised, unprofessional arrogant and downright disrespectful of peoples time.

Hilda Care is outstanding. As a Support Coordinator, I’ve had situations where I needed a Support Worker at the very last minute for my cleints, and they delivered without hesitation. Not once or twice but always. They found the right person within hours and made sure the client felt safe and supported. They have paid heed to client’s feedback and tweaked their services accordingly everytime. Their staff are well trained, reliable, and always go above and beyond to meet client needs. It’s clear they genuinely put clients first. Highly recommended.

This is one of the most reliable and compassionate disability service providers we’ve worked with. Their communication is clear. The support workers show great understanding and patience, especially during challenging moments. They make everyday routines more enjoyable and less stressful for everyone involved. We feel very lucky to have them on our side.

Questions About SIL and Mental Health

Is psychosocial SIL the same as a mental health group home?

No. SIL is support in a home, usually shared by two to four people. There are no facility rules. The home has a tenancy agreement, not an admission. The participant chooses who they live with and has a say in how the household runs.

My needs go up and down depending on how I am going. Can SIL work for that?

Yes. Changing needs are a normal part of psychosocial disability and the plan is built to account for them. If your needs change significantly over time, your support coordinator can request a plan review with the NDIA.

Can I keep my psychiatrist, GP and psychosocial recovery coach?

Yes. SIL does not replace your clinical team. With your consent, we keep them informed so everyone is working from the same plan.

Do I have to take part in programs or group activities?

No. Your days are your own. We support the goals you choose, not a program schedule.

Can I move in directly from a mental health unit?

Yes. Ward social workers can refer directly using our referral form. We reply the same day and prioritise hospital discharges.

How do I know if SIL funding is right for my situation?

Our SIL funding eligibility guide covers how the NDIA assesses psychosocial SIL. If you want to talk it through, call 1300 440 777.
